Settlement Reached in Lawsuit Against Weld County Jail

With the ACLU of Colorado and a group of renowned civil rights firms, Maxted Law LLC reached a settlement agreement and proposed consent decree with Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams in Carranza et al. v. Reams, in which a preliminary injunction was granted against the Sheriff for failing to protect medically vulnerable inmates in the jail.

Among other achievements, the proposed consent decree requires the jail to identify and protect those medically vulnerable to COVID-19, ensure masks are provided, promote social distancing, and implement arrest standards to minimize the number of new intakes entering the jail. The agreement also requires the Sheriff to pay attorney fees of $122,387.60 to plaintiffs’ counsel. For more information about the agreement, see the ACLU press release.
