Denver Post: Maxted Law Files COVID-19 Lawsuit Against Weld County Jail With ACLU

Maxted Law LLC filed a landmark COVID-19 class action federal lawsuit against Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams due to an outbreak of COVID-19 coronavirus in Weld County jail, teaming with the ACLU and several other established civil rights firms. As reported by the Denver Post, “Weld County’s sheriff failed to heed public health orders to protect detainees, correctional staff and the public from the novel coronavirus, resulting in an outbreak inside the county jail, the ACLU of Colorado and civil rights attorneys allege in a federal lawsuit.”

“This lawsuit is necessary in part because of a failure of state-wide judicial leadership,” attorney David Maxted said as reported in the Denver Post article. “Without statewide leadership, others like Sheriff Reams will continue to ignore science and data, and thereby endanger the public as a whole. COVID-19 is spreading like wildfire through the Weld County Jail, and only action by this court can change the deadly course of events unfolding there.”

The case is Carranza v. Reams, 20-cv-977 and the complaint can be located on the ACLU website here.
